Today I'll start to announce my first Danny Elfman website. I've had an all-Danny internet station and I've put up a webpage here and there over this past year, but as an Elfman fan for more than fifteen years this is my first true website. Recently it got to the point where I realised I really need to start my own websites -- buy some domains and pay for hosting. As I was starting other sites Elfman kept coming to the forefront of my mind and I could no longer stand putting that off. From what I've seen dannyelfman.info is the first "dannyelfman" domain anybody's ever started with actual honest intentions of making a site about the man and his music. There's alot more content to be added as we go on, but for now there's a biography, a store to buy his music and movies, and a fan forum.

Team Elfman's Shirley Walker 1945-2006

April 10, 1945 - November 29, 2006

Composer and Elfman team-mate Shirley Walker died from a brain aneurysm Wednesday November 29 in Los Angeles, California. She was 61. Elfman fans will recognize the name from Danny Elfman soundtracks, many of which she played a part in conducting and helping with additional orchestrations. She also composed Batman: The Animated Series (1992), which used Danny's theme for the opening. Many agree that she is the one composer who composed an original Batman movie score as satisfying as Elfman's, with 1993's Batman: Mask of the Phantasm.

She worked with Danny again on Dick Tracy (1990) and arranged its Oscar-winning song "Sooner or Later (I Always Get My Man)" written by Stephen Sondheim. Walker won a Daytime Emmy for her work on 1999's Batman Beyond . More recently she's scored Willard and the Final Destination films.

There are a few composers I'm a big fan of, like Danny Elfman, and then there are other composers who've done film scores that have been some of my very favorites for a long time. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm is one of those great underfamed scores. I saw this movie in a theatre when it first opened, and still think it's the best written Batman movie. Shirley Walker didn't use any of Danny's themes for the film, but I was thrilled with these new themes of her own, and the opening titles with their tremendous gothic atmosphere.

Also I've yet to know of another person born on April 10th that I didn't like.

I really like what I hear in the samples. Given that this is Danny Elfman's only all-new film score album this year, released under his name and with seventeen tracks of new Elfman film music, this is a welcome CD. At the end is the 18th track, and of course it's the obligatory song by another artist. This time it's Sarah McLachlan with "Ordinary Miracle".

The Family Man - Rare Danny Elfman Holiday Film Score

Danny also scored the Hannibal Lecter film Red Dragon for Brett Ratner.

A various artists album was released with different songs from the movie, including Talking Heads' "Once in a Lifetime", but only two tracks of Mr. Elfman's music are available commercially on that soundtrack album.

The cues I've included in this mix come from a rare promotional-only CD given to the voting members in consideration to nominate Danny's film score for an Academy Award. This mix is about twenty minutes long.

This is a good holiday movie, a little bit like a modern day "It's a Wondeful Life", where Jack (Nicolas Cage) wakes up in an alternate life he thought he was missing. His girlfriend has been replaced by a wife and kids. His sports car is replaced by a mini-van. And his lucrative job as President of an Investment House is history, he's now a tire salesman for Big Ed's.

Every year they show this on NBC, and I think it's on this Friday night already. But if you're not watching TV Friday night, this is worth renting, so check it out.

Nightmare Before Christmas 3-D Theatres

Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas is now playing in 3-D "at a theatre near you", which in this case means you may have to travel out of town or even to another state because the film is only playing at theatres with Disney Digital 3-D capability. The theatre locator on the official site will show theaters within 5, 10 , and 100 miles of your zip code. If you're out of that range this locator isn't very helpful to find anything around you. So here is the list of all theatres now showing the Nightmare Before Christmas in 3D. You should then be able to find any of these theatres online through a search engine, or use Disney's locator again once you've found the zip code for the theatre you want to travel to. The film will be in theatres for a while, so if you can't see it this weekend you may want to make a trip next weekend or on Halloween (a Tuesday this year).
